- Oribi Antelope (mpewo)
- Secondary totem
- Grey rat (kayozi)
The Mpewo clan takes the oribi antelope as its omuziro, the primary totem. Its akabbiro, the secondary totem, is recorded as Grey Rat (Kayozi). Drawn from Roscoe (1911); this page grows as further sources are reviewed.
Roscoe (1911), listing the clans of Buganda with their totems, records the oribi antelope (Mpewo) as the omuziro of this clan, with Grey Rat (Kayozi) as its akabbiro. Roscoe marks this among the clans whose sons could not be presented as candidates for the throne: a Kabaka might marry a woman of the clan, but her son was debarred from the succession. Spelling follows Roscoe’s 1911 transcription and awaits native-speaker review.
