Omuziro
Rain Water (mazi)

The Mazi clan takes the rain water as its omuziro, the primary totem. Roscoe records no secondary totem for it. Drawn from Roscoe (1911); this page grows as further sources are reviewed.

Roscoe (1911), listing the clans of Buganda with their totems, records the rain water (Mazi) as the omuziro of this clan, and gives no akabbiro for it. Roscoe marks this among the clans whose sons could not be presented as candidates for the throne: a Kabaka might marry a woman of the clan, but her son was debarred from the succession. Roscoe also marks it among the clans that attached themselves to another clan. Roscoe records that this clan joined the Lion clan. Spelling follows Roscoe’s 1911 transcription and awaits native-speaker review.
